When I say I am a Doula and Postpartum Care Specialist, many wonder what exactly that means. Well simply put, I am an extra set of hands for mom so that she can focus on bonding with her baby while I take care of small tasks to assist her in this beautiful yet challenging time of transition.
The good ole days...
At one point in time, it was second nature for the women in a family to gather around a new mom and take care of her while she rested and recovered from the birth. Most societies have a 40 day period, or roughly 6 weeks, when mom is catered to and allowed to rest. She may also be prepared special foods and undergo healing rituals while she is recovering.
Today's harsh realities...
But the reality is that many women are not even getting 4 days to just rest and recuperate in the US. Modern culture really does not nurture the mother. After a mother bring her newborn home, many family members visit for a short while to coo over the baby, but their visits are infrequent and not helpful. Distance is also an issue. Family members and friends may not stay close. Paternity leave is still a luxury and inaccessible for many new days. Parents of a newborn may still have older siblings that need attention as well. All of these demands leaves new mothers with more to do and think about than they would have had they had more help and support.
Postpartum doula care fulfills a vital role...
This is where postpartum doula support comes in. I give much needed help and support to mothers. Some of the services I provide as a Postpartum Care Specialist at RootMama Maternal Care include breastfeeding support, healthy meal preparation, light housekeeping, laundry, and simple errand runs. I provide the vital emotional and social support mothers need in this period of time.
Postpartum support is a natural extension of the support given during pregnancy and childbirth. Vital postpartum care services can help prevent new mothers from being stressed, making them less at risk for postpartum depression.
RootMama's commitment to superior postpartum care services...
