We saw a beautiful manifestation of Black womanhood and African Spirituality at her 2017 grammy performance.
All those in the know were in awe of her manifestation of Oshún, the Goddess of Rivers and Beauty. She flaunted her pregnant belly in a way no other artist ever has. For the first time I’ve ever seen, Beyonce bared her body but not for sexual reasons. Rather she demonstrated the beauty that is the Black expecting woman in all her glory and grandeur. Feel how you want about Bey, you cannot deny the beauty and iconic moment that we all witnessed.
One thing I’ve learned about institutions like the grammys and the oscars, is that we as Black people cannot covet any of their “awards.” It’s not a situation that you can love them win you win, read Jada and Will, yet despise them and claim it’s rigged when you lose. Every negro wants to be the token negro to win. On the very rare occasion that a token negro wins, Black america wants to rejoice like it’s some big occasion. Truth be told, I don’t care about any of those awards. We all know that Lemonade is the best album of 2016. We don’t need the decrepit old farts of the grammys to cosign that.
I live for the day all Black artists stop participating in those charades.
